From the sky to snowy stages, one of Edmonton’s most beloved winter festivals returns. Inspired by the legend of its namesake, as well as French-Canadian, First Nation, and Métis traditions, Flying Canoë Volant is an interactive, musical event that will bring Edmonton’s French quarter and Mill Creek Ravine to bright life.

Grab your treat-loving friends (and pets!) and head to Old Strathcona for the Sweet Treats & Latte Festival. Local coffee shops, bakeries and restaurants put out their best baked goods, most delicious delights and highly caffeinated coffees (one assumes — I don’t drink coffee). With each featured item ranging from $5-10, it’s great (and affordable) way to support local.

The 16th-century classic tragedy, Doctor Faustus, tells the story of a man (Faustus) who makes a deal with the devil Mephistopheles that (SPOILER) ends with his spiritual damnation. But what did Mephistopheles get up to next? That’s the question writer/producer Connor Yuzwenko-Martin — and his all-Deaf cast — answer in After Faust, an ASL-performed (with captioning) play that explores the “choices that lay along the path of forgiveness and self-transformation” at Fringe Theatre Arts Barns.

The Road to the Junos is a whole lotta fun, and heads directly through The Station on Jasper, the Starlite Room, La Cité francophone, the Rec Room and other locations. Local artists like D’Orjay the Singing Shaman and Mariel Buckley will get you in the musical mood for the big event in March.

Spend an evening with Canadian music legend Bruce Cockburn at the Winspear Centre Bruce Cockburn as he shares songs from lifelong musical journey inspired by music, politics and spirituality from around the world.

The most awarded artist in Canadian country music, Gord Bamford, brings all his hits — plus songs from his 10th studio album, Diamonds In A Whiskey Glass — to the River Cree Casino.

Vancouver’s Kid Koala (Eric San) brings his “eclectic approach to sound collage” to The Starlite Room for a set that will have you moving to his “far-flung beat experiments.”

Alberta Ballet welcomes Complexions Contemporary Ballet to its 2022/23 season with a two-act show celebrating all things love with music from today’s best artists. WOKE will see dancers perform music by Kendrick Lamar, Logic, Drake, Diplo and others, while LOVE ROCKS will get you moving to the sexy sounds of Grammy Award winner Lenny Kravitz. It’s a night of love and dance to remember.

Feed the Soul Dining Week showcases the welcome, growing influence African cuisine is having on our local food scene, with 15 Black-owned restaurants, food retailers and makers sharing their tasty wares at various establishments (like Sauce Modern Caribbean Cuisine, Graham’s Jerk House and Café Caribbean) around town. The theme of the event is “feed yuh soul, feed yuh belly.”

Founded in Edmonton in 2017, the International Festival of Winter Cinema (IFWC) show the “best winter films from around the world, on one huge snow screen, in a truly unique location,” and that location is Hawrelak Park. Enjoy the films (for free!) made by talented, winter-loving filmmakers, then frolic in the real snow yourself.

For 30 years, the Silver Skate Festival has brought families to Hawrelak Park to celebrate winter life with art, education and fun. There’s a Snow Sculpture Garden, culinary delights, art installations and, oh yeah, you can skate on the city’s largest skating pond. It’s a great (free) festival that brings out the best of winter.

We’d say “get out and brave the cold” for the Canadian Birkie Cross-Country Ski Festival, but it hasn’t been super cold lately, and every time we cros-country ski we end up sweating our snowsuits off. Regardless, head out to Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreational Area for some fresh air, beautiful scenery and a great winter workout.

The Imperial Sovereign Court of the Wild Rose is calling all owners of a lonely heart to Evolution Wonderlounge for the Lonely Hearts Pageant. The annual Valentine’s Day pageant will have all the hallmarks of a great Feb. 14: love, laughter and vote-determined judgement of the talented performers.

Hazeldean Community Market’s first market of the year is as romantic as they come. Of course, you already have plans for Valentine’s Day (right?!), but you can surprise your loved one (and support local vendors) by perusing the Sweet Hearts Market at Hazeldean Community league.

The Festival Players for Kids perform a musical version of Alice in Wonderland at Festival Place. Guided by professionals, a group of talented local children bring all the classic characters to life, including Tweedledum, Tweedledee, a suspiciously mellow caterpillar and the easily angered Queen of Hearts.

Class up your Family Day weekend with a kid-friendly, classical musical performance at the Winspear. Beethoven Lives Upstairs tells the story of young Christoph and his uncle exchanging letters about the “madman” in the upstairs apartment of Christoph’s Vienna home. Featuring more than 25 excerpts of Beethoven’s music over approximately 50 minutes, it’s a beautiful to introduce children to some of the greatest music of all time.

#WinterIsCancelled thanks to the Afro Latin Live Music Festival YEG at the Starlite Room. Bringing the sights and sounds of African, Caribbean, and Latin culture to Edmonton, the fest celebrates music, dance, arts, education, and entrepreneurship of the communities making our city a better, more vibrant place.

The top stars in Canadian professional wrestling come to the Rec Room for Love Pro Wrestling: Streets Ahead. Grand Champion “The Intangible” Zoë Sager, will be there along with Jack Pride, the RADz, Son of Irish and Taryn From Accounting. Come for all the dramatic, high-flying action, stay to find out what Taryn From Accounting’s gimmick is (we’re hoping it involves using a calculator as a weapon).

Red, white, port, sparkling and dessert — Winefest, at the Edmonton Convention Centre, will have any kind of wine you could want from the world’s most celebrated regions, all paired with sweet and savoury eats. But beware: there are over 300+ flavours, so pace yourself.

Ballet Edmonton welcomes two newcomers to its stage in creo, which features blackmoon by Montreal-born Dorotea Saykaly, and only the window, from Zurich-based creator Ihsan Rustem. Each bring a wealth of global choreographic experience into these beautiful stories told through dance.

Canadian rock band Honeymoon Suite take the River Cree stage with songs from its nearly 40-year career, along with Headpins.

What happens in Vegas…actually happens at the Kingsway Legion Branch, and it’s fabulous. Imperial Sovereign Court of the Wild Rose and David Vanity Chimko present Viva Drag Vegas!, the ultimate drag experience with the fiercest drag queens and kings performing hit songs in all the Vegas glory (including dinner and dessert).

As Twin Flames, husband-and-wife duo Chelsey June métis (Algonquin Cree heritage) and Jaaji (Inuk and Mohawk from Nunavik and Kahnawake) bring their beautiful music (in English, French and Inuktitut) to Festival Place for an evening of musical storytelling balanced by comedic relief and discussions of darker issues.
