Having been a part of Edmonton’s culinary scene for over 40 years, Bistro Praha has become a true local institution, and an inseparable part of the downtown core. Known for its savoury schnitzels, old-fashioned setting and a selection of European beers, Bistro Praha inspires a feeling of nostalgia and warmth, even if you haven’t been there before. It never fails to deliver simple quality and a sense of homelike comfort — whether it’s a classic, thin and breaded Wiener Schnitzel, or a dessert crepe. The variety of crepes makes it hard to choose — there are peach and banana crepes, a delectable strawberry crepe with chocolate sauce and whipped cream… and Crepe “a’ la King” is aptly named. The combination of roasted chestnut liqueur, chocolate sauce and whipped cream is a hard-to-beat indulgence. — Kateryna Didukh

The NHL memorabilia on the wall brings back memories of a time when the Oilers played just down the street. But even though the team has moved downtown, Coliseum Pizza & Steak still draws customers, proving that the old-school steak dinners, giant rib racks and big pizza pies were the real attractions for those who packed this place back then, and those who eat there now. There’s something truly special about a Sunday steak dinner, and those silver trays filled with all the fixings for your baked potato. — Steven Sandor

For over 10 years, childhood friends Christian Mena and Adelino Oliveira have successfully infused their Chilean and Portuguese cultures into what’s become one of Edmonton’s culinary surest things. The wood tables and floor give a warm, homey vibe, like visiting rich grandparents in the old country, and the piano makes it feel like a song or party could bust out at any moment, which it does every weekend. Using sustainable seafood (served hot and cold), AAA beef cuts and fresh fruits and veggies (start with a Five Tomato salad before the Steak & Lobster to try it all in one meal), the expansive menu covers the flavour spectrum. With all the exciting downtown change, it’s good to have an established place that delivers. — Cory Schachtel
