Nisha Patel’s roles as executive director of the Edmonton Poetry Festival and Edmonton’s poet laureate require a diverse assortment of tasks, but, no matter what she’s doing, she tries to create a memorable outfit that merges fun and function, and doesn’t stick to any particular aesthetic.
“Every day is an opportunity to showcase a different part of yourself,” Patel says. “I want to be able to maintain a sense of identity and playfulness throughout the day.” And when she takes the stage for a poetry reading, she tries to set the tone for the show through her clothing.
“Stage outfits are very fun but stressful for me because I try not to repeat an outfit for a full year.”
“My custom-designed denim jacket, which I designed myself. I did all the patchwork and paneling on the jacket from EightyTwo Denim. It’s taken over three years to take shape and, every time I travel, I bring back something to add to it.”
