Since the Edify office is located in this hospitable neighbourhood, taking a walk in surrounding parks is one of my favourite lunch break activities. And for those who aren’t in a mood for a hardcore outdoor day along River Valley Road or in Victoria Park, these small parks on the west edge of downtown may surprise you with their unique charms.
Whether you’re on your way to the 124 Grand Market, or looking for an outdoor spot to hang out, don’t miss out on the gorgeous community garden and hidden pathways in Oliver.
103 Ave, 112 St
This urban park with a small pond is a lovely outdoor hub for surrounding residents (and Edify staff). The unique water feature that flows into the pond adds extra excitement for our office dogs. Early in the morning, you may also spot geese behind the wetland plants along the water’s edge. There are benches all around the park and alongside the tidy stone roads, which makes the park an ideal lunch spot.

As its name suggests, this is a small peaceful community garden featuring various flowers and bushes nurtured by residents. There aren’t many benches, but the tidy pathways are perfect places to take a stroll. The fresh smell of soil reminds me of the lively nature Frances Burnett portrayed in The Secret Garden. Don’t miss out on this garden during summertime, as sunflowers just start to bloom.

Encompassing Oliver Community League, Oliver Park is the largest park on this list. The broad green field is perfect for outdoor sports and dog frolics. Once you walk past the field, there’s a modern-day playground structure on the sand floor. If you’re looking for aqua activities, check out the Oliver Outdoor Pool, which is open until the first week of September.

This rail-themed park is where families have the most fun. The playground is under plenty of shade with benches and picnic tables. Kids can either climb up and down the locomotive-shaped slide structure, or run through the splash pads for a cool down. There’s also a small field with enough space for dog frisbees, and green hills to lie down.

110 St, 103 Ave – Jasper Ave
Railtown Park is right next to the busy 109th Street, yet I only just discovered it. This linear-shaped park is built north of Jasper Ave, like a secret pathway between the Canterra Centre and nearby condos. It’s perfect for a walk or a bike ride. The tall trees and narrow green fields along the pathway makes the walk feel like going on an adventure in a Pokemon game, especially when a curious squirrel or bird passes by.
