POWER & MODESTY
In Diinsi Abuur: Broadcast Signals at Latitude 53, photographer Faisa Omer spotlights the beauty and strength of Black
Muslim women — most of them from Edmonton’s Somali diaspora. Her radiant portraits, created during the pandemic in
her northside apartment, use traditional Somali textiles to both honour and subvert cultural notions of modesty. “We really
had to tone down our beauty,” says Omer of her conservative upbringing. Now based in Ottawa, her quietly transgressive
work premiered at Minneapolis’s Soomal House of Art, but returning to Edmonton feels like a homecoming.
Co-presented with artist Siham Salah, the exhibition runs until June 14.
