Coffee Bureau
With locations on Jasper Avenue and
in the Mercury Block — looking into a
reimagined Wîhkwêntôwin neighbour-
hood — Coffee Bureau knows all about
location, location, location. These spots
are ideal for an Americano or a Flat
White, maybe a cherry Danish with some
cream cheese, and people watching.
I enjoy the cappuccino that’s so rich
it doesn’t need sugar. And it’s obviously
convenient that the new Mercury Block
location is right across the street from
the Edify offices. I don’t know what else
a coffee shop can do to curry favour
with our judges than open up literally
steps away from the editor’s desk. – S.S.

The Colombian Coffee
& Roastery
The Colombian Coffee & Roastery brings coffee culture to
Edmonton neighbourhoods, now with locations in Glenora, the
French Quarter, Parkallen, Mill Creek and Forest Heights.
The interiors strike a perfect balance between industrial
design (exposed conduit included) and cozy comfort. They’re
the kind of places where you can settle in for work, catch up
with friends, or simply enjoy a consistently good cup of coffee.
Using beans from cofounder (with partner Kristin Panylyk)
Santiago Lopez’s family farm in Colombia, the roasteries con-
sistently deliver excellent coffee alongside standouts like the
Loxocado (diced cured salmon and lime-brightened avocado
on sourdough) and the perfectly yeasty brioche doughnuts.
Whether you’re ordering a straightforward latte or exploring
their “not-coffee” offerings, the always friendly service matches
the welcoming industrial-chic spaces perfectly. – L.K.

Lui-Chi’s
I’m from rural Alberta. Being used to
wide-open spaces — think a much
colder Radiator Springs from Pixar’s
Cars — makes navigating downtown an
adventure. The city’s pulse is frantic, and
I need a break.
Lui-Chi’s offers a steampunk-themed
world away from the hustling outside
chaos — calm and spacious, enhanced
with brass fixtures and weathered
wooden accents. Berry Scone and
barrel-aged latte in hand, I sink into a
chair and let out a sigh of relief as the
city’s noises fade. – A.M.

A trip to the lively Mokha Coffee House is much more convenient than a flight to Yemen — and the Middle Eastern-
inspired decor makes it hard to tell the difference. The cardamom-strong Adani Tea is perfect for sipping while
people watching — which is easy, as the flow of community members through Mokha’s doors never dies down. – A.M.
