Happy & Olive
On the weekend, Happy & Olive offers
a full brunch menu in a space that’s
open, airy and meant for conversation
over coffee. The highlights are the Fried
Chicken and Waffles, with a slaw that’s…
spicy? And the French Toast, stuffed
with bananas and topped with coconut
whipped cream, is great. The mushroom
or salmon latkes offer a real alternative
to those of us who might not want to
have another Sunday eggs Benny.
But, while it’s not called a “Brunch”
menu, Happy & Olive also offers
breakfast treats during the week—
burritos with eggs and chorizo and
a “Brekkie” with egg and gruyère
cheese. So, really, your morning
breakfast options aren’t limited to the
weekend. – S.S.

Rosewood Foods
What can we say about Rosewood Foods that hasn’t already
been said about Connor McDavid? It’s fast, always impresses,
and makes downtown a better place.
So why does Rosewood dominate like McDavid? Our
working theory: It’s all about them milky buns. As the basis
of six out of the 12 non-salad food items on the menu, the
perfectly seasoned buns could be too pastry like in the wrong
hands, but Head Chef Jesse Gado’s hands are like McDavid’s on
a breakaway: just sweet enough.
If it’s not obvious, you should get the Breakfast Sandwich. Or
the Lox & Egg Sandwich. And you could always come back for
lunch to try the Bar Burger, made with a milk bun as well. You’ll
feel like you scored a bread based-hat trick and still have time
for a pre-game nap. – C.S.

On New Year’s Eve, I find myself at Pip
for brunch — bold move, I know. But this
cozy nook in Old Strathcona is packed
with the kind of crowd that makes you
wonder if beanies and Blundstones are
part of the dress code (spoiler: they are).
The Mushroom Eggs Benedict? A dreamy
mash-up of caramelized onions and
roasted mushrooms. The Bee Sting Bun?
An almond-crusted, oozing pastry cream,
and drizzled with spiced honey that is
“perfect to share,” per the menu. Public
Service Announcement: You do NOT have
to share, and no regrets. Pip’s the kind of
spot that makes you want to drop words
like “mouthfeel” and “notes of” because
everything feels so cool. – H.Z.
