THE
BOOMERANG
EFFECT
When past employees circle back,
it’s worth making a catch
Throwing a boomerang requires some skill
annotated by said employee
and technique to have it return successfully. Just ask my
son. The first time he threw a boomerang, he’d shown a
natural talent for technique, but it returned much faster
than he expected. He caught it with his chin, cutting it
open in a clean slice.
I experienced boomerang children. These are the kids
who come back home after launching into adulthood. It
could be for parental guidance, but more likely for the
free rent. This requires more patience than skill.
Definitely rent.
Comparatively, having boomerang staff is less common
and almost completely out of your hands, but it’s a
beautiful thing when it happens. Helen Metella, the
magazine’s founding managing editor, left for a few
years to do some other creative projects and then

then again as guest editor of the previous issue.
And then there’s Omar. He first worked with us in

funded by Alberta Magazine Publishers Association.
Designed to create opportunities for young writers to
gain writing and editing experience, it’s an essential part
of bringing up talent and helping them hone their craft,
develop their own voices and learn the technical aspects
of magazine journalism.
When Omar arrived on his first day as an intern, I
saw a young man who seemed quite sure of himself.
Maybe too sure, but there was no mistaking his talent.
The kid could write. His internship was extended three
months, and after that he was offered an assistant editor
position and then associate editor. After working with us

for nearly five years, he announced he was becoming a
full-time freelancer.
I was dubious about his success, but he surprised
me. He wrote articles for big titles like Rolling Stone and
The New Yorker. He authored books and made films. He
taught and mentored writers. He grew up.
And now Omar is back as our editor-in-chief. Thank-
fully, this isn’t a chin-hitting moment for me. It’s a full
on, intentional decision. I put out my hand and caught
this boomerang because I believe that a city magazine
is essential to our culture and I wanted someone at
the helm who shares that vision. Edify is a community
connector, telling the stories that bind us together
as citizens who share this place and the collective
experience of living here.
