feels like she’s trudging through snow. “Civida gave me snowshoes, and life is extremely purposeful now — my children are the first in five generations to be raised by their mother.”
Providing stability for people to find purpose is what Civida’s mission has been for over 50 years. Between managing over 5,300 affordable homes
in the Edmonton area, and providing subsidy assistance to more than 3,400 more households, Civida helps over 23,000 Edmontonians to have safe, affordable housing. For some, it’s their forever home. For others like McRae, it’s a stepping stone to becoming the people they always wanted to be.
The charitable arm, Civida Housing Foundation, helps younger clients with programs like its Star Awards that provides four young people, living in Civida communities, with $5,000 each to pursue
post secondary education. Bree Claude, Foundation Executive Director, “They might be a Grade 12 student or a young adult and they can take this post-secondary pathway to potentially change their lives for the better.”
These opportunities are made possible through corporate partnerships with local, collaborative businesses: Aman Builders, Ecopest, Rohit Group and Edify magazine.
McRae had her full-circle moment as the Star Awards’ keynote speaker at the event
this fall. “I always had this strong hunch that there was more to what was being presented in life,” she says. So I want to encourage [others] to know that there's purpose for their life, and despite any adversities that they're in, they are capable of persevering.”
The folks at Civida, and those who support them, think McRae is right.
