PUBLISHER’S NOTE
FAREWELL
TO THE CHIEF
Steven Sandor’s departure means
good things for journalism — and
a new era for Edify
Are you scared or excited? That question, or
some version of it, is what I’ve been asked several times
since we announced Steven Sandor’s departure as our
editor-in-chief, after nearly 15 years.
It’s a good question. But I don’t think I have a good
answer because it’s both.
Steven made a life decision to go back to his roots in
newspaper journalism. I’m glad to hear the opportunity
exists for someone of his calibre to write for our local
newspaper. I’m a longtime subscriber to the Edmonton
Journal and The Globe and Mail — because I think it’s
our duty as citizens of a democratic society to support
journalism.
I confess I get paper versions of each newspaper.
I stare at screens all day, so I’m happy to open my front
door in the early morning hours and see my newspapers
there. I read them standing up at my kitchen counter
while awaiting the waking effect of two double espressos.
On Saturdays, I force myself to set aside a couple of
sections of The Globe and Mail to savour the next
morning, including the indulgence of obituaries. When
my family tells me it’s a morbid thing to do, I say no,
it’s a glimpse into inspiring lives — and the writing is
excellent.
Any amount of fear about losing a valuable colleague
comes with a pretty hefty dose of excitement, too.
Steven taught me a lot — even when we disagreed. He
helped me hone my thinking about the role of a city
magazine. He fully supported my vision that Edify be a
community builder, an arts lover, a people encourager,
a business champion and an authentic storyteller.

As I lead our team into the next phase, we will
complete the search for our new editor. By the time you
read this, we’ll know who it is. And our city will be even
better for it.
