YOUR TURN
RE: “DARE NOT TO BE STUPID,” MAY, 2024 ISSUE
Once again, you have brought me almost to tears. Tears of joy, that you’ve said these things out loud, and that I’m not the only one to have noticed such destructive directions confronting us.
Steven, your trenchant obser- vations about the depths to which we have collectively sunk regarding reading is both welcome and fright- ening, as much truth seems to be... but it should be on a larger stage.
It should be on billboards all across the city. On roadsides across the country.
Your observation about “nurturing” stupidity should be shocking to us
all; you are totally correct. I cannot help wondering whether people have always been this obtuse, and quiet about it, or if they simply have been given a green light by being able to spread nonsense in anonymity. Too dumb to know that they’re dumb has always been a dangerous foothold to civility.
My book club has discussed this idea, in various forms. We read about democracy, about historical reve- lations, about new truths emerging around us. But, the youngest member is 70 years old; some of us are over 80. We share your concern for your children. We expand it, though, to concern for where our grandchildren will be taken.
Thank you for shining a little light.

RE: “THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH,” MAY, 2024 ISSUE
As a developer of several communities in south Edmonton, it was very disappointing to read Mike Kohl’s comments in “The Beautiful South” article where it was suggested that there is a lot of land supply in the south relative to the north.
Unless the City of Edmonton moves forward with planning of lands that were annexed to the south of 41st Ave. SW, the supply in south Edmonton is very limited. The need for planning south of 41st Ave. SW is urgent, and the suggestion that there is ample supply is just not correct.
