Two Edmonton Companies Reach
the Hall of Fame
Every person who feels the beat of their
own heart knows what dancing is.
For the first time in Canadian history, two Edmonton-
based dance companies are being inducted into
the Dance Collection Danse Canadian Dance Hall
of Fame.
Canada’s Ukrainian Shumka Dancers
Brian Webb
Following the world premiere of Ukrainka in 2024, Shumka
toured with the National Ballet of Ukraine to 18 venues across
the United States including Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
and New York City Center.
Webb’s most recent dance, Joshua Tree, had its world
premiere in Bangalore, India, where it represented Canada
at Attakkalari’s Centre for the Performing Arts and New
Technology’s International Festival of Contemporary Dance.
Telling stories through dance as an expression of heritage and
breaking boundaries to create a collective experience, BWDC
and Shumka have championed Edmonton arts and culture
for decades. BWDC is entering its 47th year in Edmonton and
Shumka is celebrating its 65th season.
“We acknowledge our donors and the private
sector, along with our boards, committees, and
collaborators who so generously support our efforts.
They keep our boots moving and enable us to do
what we do that much better.”
– Shumka Artistic Director Tasha Orysiuk
“Our local, regional and national communities
have offered us support for many years and given
us the opportunity to dance with total freedom to
be who we are.”
– BWDC Artistic Director Brian Webb
