My dad, like most dads, is really just a big kid. He loves puzzles and took particular joy in sending us on scavenger hunts for our holiday gifts, complete with clues at different locations throughout the house. It made for fun Christmas mornings when my brother and I would team up to help each other out, not to mention a treat for my mom, too, as she finally got to sleep in.
At Easter, though, my dad had the most fun. There were no clues involved, no elaborate planning, no having to hold in the secret in the days and weeks leading to Easter morning. He’d hide chocolate Easter eggs throughout our house in the most random places. I’m sure he stayed up for hours after my brother and I had gone to bed, giggling to himself as he found an even better spot for the next set of eggs.
There was no end to the nooks and crannies that no one had ever noticed before — that is, until we were on the hunt for sweet, yummy chocolate. We’d spend hours honing our investigative skills (no wonder my brother became such a keen-eyed police officer!), trying to outdo each other and get the most eggs.
Once we were pretty sure we had exhausted all of my dad’s favourite hiding spots, and discovered the new ones he had found the night before, we excitedly assessed our haul. It was like Halloween in April, without having to pick out the Tootsie Rolls.
This Easter, you don’t have to go to quite the same lengths as my dad did — mostly because the Strathearn Community League has already done it for you! Masks are required; although bunny ears aren’t, they might help with your sleuthing skills.
