Nothing makes a home feel cozier than handmade gifts, and the Work of our Hands Spring Showcase is the perfect place to stock up. The annual showcase was cancelled last year due to the pandemic, which means ample supplies are available this year.
Heather Edwards started the Work of Our Hands Showcase over 30 years ago from her home. Now, the showcase takes place in her pottery studio.
“The showcase has a very personal feel, and the blow of the pandemic was crushing emotionally,” says Edwards. “I don’t just make pots… I also make relationships and connections.”
Over a dozen local artisans have been getting their hands dirty preparing for the showcase. Up-cycled fabrics have been turned into purses, vests and caftans for the local fashionista. But don’t forget to accessorize. There are two artisans who make jewellery.
If you’d rather stylize your home than your closet, there’s plenty of home decor to satisfy. Watercolour paintings, clay planters, hand woven fabric rugs and wall hangings, willow baskets and more make up the home goods section.
Browse the selection of spring sweets to find local honey, sauces, infused oils and a variety of jams made from locally grown berries. While you shop for yourself, don’t forget about your furry friends. Locally made dog treats are also available and they are tail-wagging worthy.
“We would like to say how thankful we are for the support of everyone through this trying time,” says Edwards. “We will get through this and one day, in the not so far future, we will be back to the joyous chaos of what the Work of Our Hands Showcase usually is.”
Strict COVID-19 safety measures will be in place to ensure everyone has a safe, fun shopping experience. One-hour time slots must be booked online, and each time slot caters to 10 people. The space will be cleaned between each shopping group and guests will be asked to wash their hands before entering.
The Work of Our Hands Spring 2021 Showcase is on from April 29 to May 4 in Bon Accord (just 20 minutes from Edmonton). Shopping spots must be booked online before attending.
