Every day is a fun day to learn. But learning is even better with adorable cartoon animal characters, Tommy and Remi, alongside energy researchers from the University of Alberta Future Energy Systems (FES) guiding us through an energy adventure.
To cultivate people’s interest in learning about energy, land reclamation and sustainability, the FES team designed 17 booths of experiments, crafts, and activities for the upcoming event, all suitable for kids and families.
“We had a training session last weekend for our over 70 volunteers. Everyone’s so excited to engage with their activities at the Telus World of Science Edmonton,” says Dr. Valerie Miller, outreach and engagement coordinator at the FES.
Miller remembers the team noticed a lack of children’s books about energy during their virtual activity sessions. The talents then started creating their cartoon book series, starring Miller’s black pet cat, Remi, and her neighbour’s dog, Tommy. The team expects to publish its second Tommy and Remi book series about solar energy.
“During our first virtual reading session with our book, I saw a little girl pointing at her Remi the cat whenever I pointed to mine. It’s fascinating to see kids engage with new knowledge, in a fun way as well.”
Charge Up for an Energy Adventure is part of NSERC Science Odyssey, Canada’s biggest festival of science and technology. Standard Telus World of Science Edmonton entrance fees apply. The FES also holds varied science educational events both in-person and online for Science Odyssey from May 7-21.
