About 65 people, including business leaders, government officials and professional athletes, gathered in the Empire Ballroom at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald to raise awareness for the prevention of domestic violence. The Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters (ACWS) hosted the Jan. 16 event, which featured a talk by filmmaker and anti-sexist activist Jackson Katz. “This is one of the great, sad, tragic issues of our time, our culture and our history. Men’s violence against women is a world-wide problem,” said Katz, who has been involved with ACWS since 2005.
This organization provides support to women’s shelters across the province through education, research and services. Players from the Edmonton Eskimos and Calgary Stampeders were also present at the talk, as the ACWS is developing a partnership with both football teams.”It’s exciting to work with ACWS and sports organizations,” said Katz, who lives in the Los Angeles area but speaks regularly at the organization’s events. “There’s a lot of energy happening here and elsewhere to build partnerships between men and women to get us to the next level.
