A summer Churchill Square filled with event lineups welcomes an upcoming collaboration of two art and performance festivals this year. Find the 10-day Edmonton International Street Performance Festival and Works Art and Design Festival, with art installations and 35 acts, around the plaza.
“We’ve been off the square since 2017,” says Street Performance Festival’s executive director Marian Brant. “So we feel like we’re coming back home.”
With downtown construction and COVID-related postponements in the past few years, the collaboration to combine audiences is a welcome return for both festivals.
“Many of the artists this year are involved in conversation with current events, current matters of importance,” says Amber Rooke, executive director of Works Art and Design Festival. “And they’re engaged in reflection, really considering the responsibilities that we have, and addressing relationships that need to be attended to.”
The festival schedule includes a patio, scheduled street performance circle shows, the patio stage, kid’s world and the Works Art and Design installations. From close-up magic to fire juggling with hockey sticks, the festival’s got your curiosity covered.
“The square’s gonna be full and filled with laughter. There will be visual arts and performances, and the opportunity for people to connect one to another through art,” says Brant.
