Megan Lydom-Howe loves to imagine what’s missing at home. When she co-founded Alpine Ember Co., a small-batch candle business, back in 2019, the idea was simple: to create a home goods brand with products both cozy and luxurious.
“We always get a dozen new scent ideas, make them in-house, sit down and smell, then pick the most representative scents for the season,” says Lydom-Howe. “We once wanted to make a cucumber scent. Then we thought, hang on, what does cucumber smell like? Isn’t that something to eat rather than to smell? So that didn’t work out.”
The Alpine Ember Co. now features the summer collection, including Brazilian Beach, Coconut Margarita and California Market. Being one of the first scents in the house, California Market comes from the fresh bounty of a farmers’ market — mango, raspberries, peaches, basil and sandalwood.
The candles at Alpine Ember are made with coconut soy wax, with wood wicks inserted. For those who are not familiar with wood wicks, don’t forget to check out the candle care page curated by the team.
“We got a lot of concerns at the beginning, with people asking how to light the candles without knowing how to pinch off the ash. I totally get it. We’re not born with this knowledge, and taking care of home goods actually takes time to learn.”
Considering the hot, humid summer weather in Edmonton this year, Lydom-Howe has introduced room sprays as an alternative. With a variety of popular scents to choose from, including mimosa, orange ginger and rosewater lemonade, the room spray gives a quicker spread to refresh the room.
Light up the mood of your home with fresh scents at Alpine Ember Co.
