The basics of a good Indian menu, as far as this writer can tell, is that half of it consists of the tastiest, spiciest food you can find, and the other is the most savoury, to put out the heat.
That was certainly the case for my meal from Suvai Dosa’s. After deciding the Super Spicy Andra Chicken might pack too strong a punch, I went with the Schezwan Sizzler chicken and the delectable (and still-spicy) Masala Fried Fish, balanced out by four pieces of Idly — fermented urad dal and rice. The first two dishes awakened my taste buds and dampened my brow, the other soaked up the spice. Some of Suvai Dosa’s creative twists may have gone over my head, but I still managed to give this flavourful meal a grateful home. — Cory Schachtel

Tiffin India’s Fresh Kitchen bills itself as “fast- casual” Indian food and, having grown to four locations (including Kelowna) from one in 2018, it seems to be on to something.
The serving style is buffet. Build your tiffin box by first selecting rice or noodles, then adding one, two or three entrees, choosing from dozens of options including Kashmiri lamb in chili sauce, paneer pepper masala and fenugreek chicken. Top it with your choice of fried onions, mint chutney, pistachios or a selection of other delicious additions. — Michael Ganley

This spot burst onto our Best Indian list in 2022, and it holds for 2023. Where Swagat shines is with its selection of Nepalese specialties. Yes, it’s a “Best Indian” category, but it augments its menu with selections from the Himalayas. The momo is a Nepalese dumpling stuffed with meat and spices, and it’s served here on a hot plate. The Chili Chicken Momos come bathed in an onion, pepper and tomato sauce, and they’re good enough not to share. It is a place where Indian, Nepalese and Northern Chinese cuisines meet, and it’s one heck of a spicy threesome. — Steven Sandor
