The Sparkle Bar is the post-lockdown brainchild of Tanis Uzwyshyn, an Edmontonian jeweller. It was a happy accident, she explained, as she originally just wanted to work with precious gems without them exploding. “But then I saw permanent jewellery in action. What I really loved about it was that there’s a human element to it.”
If you aren’t familiar with the concept of permanent jewellery, it is usually a necklace, anklet, or a bracelet that doesn’t have a traditional clasp. Instead, its ends are welded or “zapped” together, creating a forever piece. Much like tattoos, people often get matching sets with friends or family. Think of it as a sophisticated evolution from the yarn-and-bead friendship bracelets of your childhood.
The Sparkle Bar has a wide range of gold chains and charms — all of which are pure gold, not filled or plated.
“That’s really important to me,” says Uzwyshyn, “because I just don’t want to put more junk out there. And I don’t believe in fast fashion, and I really just believe in quality.”
And quality is what you get at the Sparkle Bar, because jewellery is in Uzwyshyn’s blood, “I come from a line of jewellers. My grandparents were jewellers. They had two stores in Edmonton, and my uncle was a jeweller, and I worked there forever. My grandmother taught me everything, and now my daughters work with me,” she says.
The welding process is simple and quick, and clients book an appointment online or by phone. The Sparkle Bar also hosts pop-up events where it offers its services. You can also book for private events like weddings or birthdays.
As you leave with a piece of forever adorning your wrist, neck, ankle, or finger, you carry with you more than just a beautiful accessory. You carry a piece of artistry, a spark of creativity, and a bond that, like the jewellery itself, will stand the test of time.
