After moving to Edmonton from B.C., Candice Bartlett wanted to join a choir that blended creativity, community and an indie spirit. “So, I decided to build it,” says Bartlett, the director of Edmonton’s newest choir group.
Known for its energetic, multicultural and intergenerational membership, as well as its community focus and modern stylings, the Vox Collective will perform its season finale concert at the Metro Cinema on April 23. Spring Fling: A Night of Songs, promises Barlett, will be a multi-genre spectacle of “bold reworks” of songs by such artists as Tom Petty, Chappell Roan and Nina Simone.
Playful and inclusive with a modern sound, the 50-member Collective values creative exploration over perfecting traditions. The collective is “more focused on arrangements of folk, rock, alternative, pop and electronic songs,” says Bartlett.
The concert will also feature collaborations between the Collective and its three local “guest directors” — musical poet John Hewitt, indie-folk duo Halfway Home, and R&B powerhouse Riwo.
“We welcome guest directors to share their unique artistry and fresh perspective each session,” says Bartlett. Collaboration with Edmonton artists is a core to building community within the Edmonton music scene, says Barlett. “We’re not just singing. We’re building a space where people can show up fully, express themselves creatively, and connect.”
Bartlett says the group also makes an effort to support local causes. Proceeds from their December concert went to CKUA Radio, and funds from their upcoming Spring Fling show will be donated to the Pride Centre of Edmonton. Tickets for Spring Fling: A Night of Songs are $20.
The Collective is open to anyone over 19, but there’s an application waiting list. If you’ve ever felt the urge to sing your heart out with a creative community, this might be your cue.
