Chocorrant Pâtisserie + Café
In medieval French cuisine, entremets were served between dishes and often presented as an illusion food that looks like a completely different object. (For a modern equivalent see Netflix’s Is It Cake?)
Chocorrant’s take on this format — which was nearly sold out during my recent visit to the 124th Street pâtisserie and café — is the orange entremet, a stunningly lifelike orange perched on a vanilla wafer. The thin orange shell breaks apart with a single bite, revealing white chocolate pastry cream and just a hint of orange flavour inside.
Other standout treats: the emerald-green Earl Grey Opera, a cake that balances sweet caramel ganache with a subtle Earl Grey genoise, as well as a rich Raspberry Yuzu that layers moist cake, crumbly streusel and raspberry tart to perfection.
While croissants might not technically be desserts, I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t also urge you to try the Ube Coconut Croissant. – Alyssa Noel

Duchess Bake Shop
There is something undeniably warm about Duchess Bake Shop, the Westmount patisserie that has been serving up European-inspired delicacies since 2009. It might be the wooden floors or the Victorian sofas. It might be the silky hot chocolate, the smell perfectly blending with buttery notes from the tarts. It’s probably all of the above, coming together to make a decadent experience.
Every time I walk in, I am transported to my first bite of the Duke Cake. It was back in high school and my friend was certain my search for the best chocolate cake would come to an end. I didn’t admit this to him at the time, couldn’t give him the satisfaction, but he was right. It is that buttery whipped chocolate ganache that just keeps bringing me back. – Mariana Gutierrez Serna
