His focus on education stayed with him as he opened a training centre at Universal Dental Laboratories, offering free education sessions, speaker events and hands-on demonstrations. “This is a space dedicated to raising better technologists, and enhancing the abilities of those within the dentistry field,” says Yeung.
Opportunities like these have not always been accessible to students. Yeung created an environment where emerging technologists could learn on advanced equipment, alongside experienced professionals, when he opened his training centre. It helped enhance the standards of dental technology practices across Alberta.
Universal Dental Laboratories joined Canada Dental Group last year, and he continues to work as a senior advisor and remains active in the lab.
Yeung has also never stopped contributing to the program that shaped his path. “I am thankful to NAIT for teaching me a trade I did not expect to connect with,” he says. “I have not given back nearly enough but I can continue to support the school in whatever way I can.”
He established an endowment at the school that supports students in the Dental Laboratory Technology and the Bachelor of Business Administration, which has provided more than 20 students with financial support. He received the National Philanthropy Day Award in 2022 for his contributions to his community and a Distinguished Friends of the Institute award from NAIT, two of many honours he has earned.
Yeung wasn’t just fated to find his place in the dental technology community, he realized he was meant to pay it forward and mentor new technologists and young professionals, especially those who weren’t given the same opportunities. This need to give back to others is rooted in his Christian faith and in watching his mother’s consistent generosity.
“Even with our struggles, my mother would go get groceries and put them in front of the door of a family that needed it more than us,” he recalls. The same family later became successful and played a key role in helping Yeung’s family move to Canada. “In the end, you don’t know who is helping who.”
When a chain of giving is created, it comes back around. Through his craft, his guidance, his efforts, he is helping create a community of innovators that will propel the city forward.
