Paintings by the homeowner adorn the walls, alongside art and artifacts from the couple’s travels to India, Bali, Morocco, Vietnam and Kenya, among many other destinations, comprising a thoughtful collection. The pieces, whether sourced locally or from the other side of the globe, are in conversation with each other, creating a space that feels eclectic but never chaotic. Sculptures, vases, books and art are gathered in small vignettes. Every piece comes with a story. And while art is the star of the show, colour and character are everywhere,
from plush red carpets to zebra throws to gold-painted columns to layered drapery on several windows. Florals, animal prints and geometric patterns all find their way into the couple’s decor, but never clash.
Above the entryway hangs an antique chandelier the couple sourced from Miami. Even the ceiling incorporates art — including tin ceiling tiles in the entryway, and a Chinese zodiac-inspired mural in the living room. The dining room also features a chandelier, and a Sistine Chapel-like painting on the ceiling. The stately walnut dining table has played host to many dinner parties and family dinners.
While a visitor could easily get lost in the decor, it’s not the only standout about this home. The house itself is meticulously designed, 2,600 square feet of rich, wine coloured walls and art in unexpected spaces, like carvings and gold leaves adorning light switches and trim. No space is too small for a bit of artistic flourish.
Outside, the smell of roses lingers over the sprawling backyard. Here, the commitment to both beautiful things and maximalist aesthetics continues. The homeowners have created, with strategic planting, little secret gardens throughout the backyard, with places to sit and drink coffee in complete privacy. Along with flowers and greenery, the homeowners’ love of art carries throughout the garden with statues and intricate water features. A trellis and vines crawl up the side of the house — another opportunity taken to beautify and enhance every inch of this home.
The homeowner’s studio is in the basement, and more of his art lives there — including in unexpected places, like a potential shower stall in a bathroom that became an exhibit space for a tree sculpture. Touring the home feels, at times, like a treasure hunt: there is always something new to discover and delight in. Much like the homeowner’s art, one could spend hours with this home’s design, letting the details wash over you as you listen to the stories of the homeowners´ travels.
