When founder Adedamola Ojoawo moved to Canada from the United Kingdom in 2025, she took her side hustle to a new level.
Inspired by her grandmother’s distinctive style and her love of the fashion and textiles of her native Nigeria, she launched a clothing store that combines the richness of African fabrics and craftsmanship with contemporary designs.
Ademadola Atelier began as a creative side project for Ojoawo while she worked in quality, safety, health and environment for large retailers and food manufacturers. Moving to Edmonton gave her the opportunity to take the business to a new level, and she opened a storefront in southeast Edmonton selling custom clothing, handbags, African wear and headwraps.
“I love the bold colours, intricate patterns, beautiful textiles and storytelling that are deeply rooted in African fashion,” says Ojoawo.
The company is animated by a belief in style as self-expression, one that everyone can participate in. Customers don’t need to come from a particular background or heritage to shop at Ademadola Atelier; Ojoawo’s mission is to introduce more people to the beauty of African apparel.
“Fashion should never be limited by size, age, culture or body shape. We want everyone who walks into our store to feel represented and confident,” says Ojoawo.
Although the idea had been brewing for many years, Edmonton is where the dream came to life.
“As someone who moved here from another country, I have found it encouraging to meet people from different cultures and backgrounds who are open to new ideas, creativity and experiences,” ” says Ojoawo. “I also love that Edmonton gives us the opportunity to introduce African-inspired fashion to a wider audience while learning from the city’s diverse cultures and creative community.”
