In the heart of Edmonton’s Churchill Square, an eclectic blend of African and Caribbean cultures come together annually for a weekend of performance, art and mouth-watering flavours. Complete with a kid’s corner, an ample assortment of food trucks and a grandeur parade, Africanival is back for its ninth year.
Since its onset, the festival has brought together entertainers from across Canada to dazzle audiences with their skills, but for Lola Adeleke, vendor manager, it’s more than just a showcase of talent. “It’s a celebration of the different cultural backgrounds representing Africa and the Caribbean.”
The three-day event includes a lineup packed with dance, music and even folktales — you’ll see the brilliance of the festival’s many represented groups, from the Nigerian, Somalian, Kenyan communities and more. Artists display their work in a dedicated arts and crafts area, giving attendees a chance to engage with a broader selection of cultural output.
Food offerings at the festival reflect its diversity. From the fragrant jerk chicken from Paradise Grill, to the savoury naija smoky jollof rice from Confy Kitchen. “Even people from Africa get the opportunity to taste other delicacies that’s not from the part where they’re from,” Adeleke explains.
After you’ve secured a plate, the next step is to take in the Saturday parade. Different community organizations and individuals participate in what is a “very beautiful and very colourful” cultural display, says Adeleke.
Complete with everything to stimulate the senses, Africanival is a can’t-miss celebration of culture and delectable eats.
Africanival is free to attend, June 6 to 8 at Churchill Square, Edmonton.
