In need of a laugh? Ed Hill’s comedy show at the Grindstone Theatre will have you smiling from ear-to-ear.
The Vancouver-raised comedian is bringing his comedy tour to the Grindstone Theatre for two nights. The tour is a follow up to his first comedy special Candy & Smiley, streaming now on Amazon Prime and Apple TV.
“The last show was about a synthesis between my parents, Candy and Smiley, and this tour is going to be the second special, now evolving into my relationships with the women in my life,” says Hill, who called me from the road in Vancouver, the previous stop on his tour. “I was able to explore who I am, where I came from and who I am in relation to these women in my life.”
Hill got his start in comedy when he was a graduate student studying psychology at Simon Fraser University. His parents wanted him to be a doctor, but Hill had other plans. At the time, he was working as a DJ, but he wanted to get away from the long, strenuous nights. Hill ended up taking a comedy class near campus and decided he was going to polish his craft.
“And the rest is history,” says Hill.
Hill’s stop in Edmonton comes in the middle of his tour, which has 32 more dates across Canada and the United States. Hill’s tour brings an essence of intimacy stemming from his comedy special. Due to the pandemic, the special was toned down with him performing in front of his family and close friends. “I did it in the style like group therapy.” He brings that raw style to the stage with a personal lineup of jokes that resonate with the crowd.
“I’m not an observational comic. I’m not a political comic and definitely not a shock comic,” says Hill. “I’m very personal and my style is very introspective. So it’s a lot of going inward. And a lot of that stuff is coming from things I’ve actually experienced. So I think my inspiration is the people I meet, the stories I hear, the experiences I have and the moments that are happening throughout life.”
Watch Ed Hill at the Grindstone Theatre (10019 81 Ave NW) on January 28 and 29. Both shows start at 8 p.m. and tickets are $20.
