Nestled in the northern seclusion of Edmonton, where the city fades and adventure begins, lies a place where getting lost is not just possible — it’s encouraged. Welcome to the Edmonton Corn Maze, a sprawling labyrinth in Parkland County that’s been a beacon of farm-fresh fun for 24 years.
This year, the fun goes cosmic as the maze partners with the Telus World of Science to celebrate its 40th anniversary. “We’ve been doing this for 24 years, and every year we try and do something that’s local or celebrating something from the city or community based,” says owner Jesse Kraay, reflecting on the team’s creative process this year. “The Telus World of Science is celebrating their 40th anniversary, so we thought that could be something that we could celebrate with them, and the logo would make a good design for a maze.”
The planning starts over the winter, as co-owners Kraay and Dan Horneman brainstorm themes and collaborate with a company in the United States that specializes in crafting intricate maze designs.
But the Edmonton Corn Maze is more than just a maze — it’s a full-fledged farm experience, complete with family-friendly activities and a bustling farmers’ market. For those seeking a break from the city without straying too far, it’s an all-day affair of fresh air, fresh produce, and fresh challenges.
The maze is open a couple months of the year, but it’s a year-round labour of love. “This supports two families. And we put a lot of work into it. The setup and then the cleanup and all that is a full-time job, but I don’t know what else I’d be doing. It’s fun to come back every year and start over, and when you hear people laughing and having a good time, it’s all worth it,” said Kraay last summer.
Expect a few out-of-this-world surprises as you navigate the twists and turns this fall, and just remember: Getting lost is half the fun!
