Do you have what it takes to climb a wall of ice? Show off your skills (or lack thereof) at YEG Ice Fest, hosted by the Alpine Club of Canada Edmonton section with the Edmonton Ski Club and Factory Climbing. This is the festival’s first year and Alpine Club of Canada Edmonton’s second year of running the ice wall.
“We hope not to just be about ice climbing, but other ways people can enjoy our winters outside recreationally,” says Tim Hankinson, YEG Ice Fest director.
The Alpine Club of Canada Edmonton section is a not-for-profit community of hikers, climbers and skiers. The club offers a wide variety of introductions for people looking to get into outdoor sports.
The one-day event has a variety of festivities to indulge in like free ice climbing, fat biking with Mud Sweat & Gears and Track ‘N Trail Fun Challenges like snowball tossing. Prior experience isn’t required.
SYC Brewing is taking over the patio at Edmonton Ski Club and food trucks will be on scene serving up warm food and drinks. You can also ski and snow tube at Edmonton Ski Hill while you’re in the area.
“If you don’t like free activities like ice climbing, fat biking, snowball toss, or ice block haul, and you don’t like food and drinks from local companies, then at least come out to talk to the multiple vendor booths who will have draw prizes that you can enter into,” says Hankinson.
YEG Ice Fest is on February 26 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m at the Edmonton Ski Club grounds, located at 9613 96 Ave. NW.
