Birchwood Meadows put down roots over 35 years ago in Sturgeon County starting as a grain farm turned tree farm turned flower farm. The family-owned farm opens up for visitors in July where they can pick their own flowers from the garden, but Cory Christopher and his mom wanted to plan an exclusive spring event.
“We’ve never really done anything for spring, and we had some extra flowers that we’re not going to necessarily need this growing season,” says Christopher. “We wanted to offer an opportunity for people to come to the greenhouse, see the farm, and also see all the seedlings.”
Christopher grew up on his parent’s farm surrounded by the beautiful flowers. He studied theatre, but went back to his roots and opened Cory Christopher Design, a creative design studio that does weddings, events, decor, floral arrangements and planters. He also collaborates with Birchwood Meadows on workshops and events.
Until June 6, people can visit Birchwood Meadows for the Garden Thyme Pop-Up event where they can shop from the greenhouse before the farm opens in July.
“Visitors get to see everything that’s growing in our little greenhouse and how that then becomes flowering plants,” says Christopher. “I think it’s very helpful for people to see the overall process of an agribusiness and how much labor goes into those flowers that eventually they’ll see during the summer.”
Perennials, annuals, and vegetables are a few garden goodies you can purchase at the event. The pop-up is the perfect place for beginners to learn about gardening and plants. Christopher recommends grasses for beginners as they’re easy to grow, and they do well in backyards with southern or western exposure.
“The event is a great opportunity for people to ask questions,” says Christopher. “My mom Debbie is a very knowledgeable lady. By coming to the event, people can ask questions, not only about annual plants, but trees, shrubs, and perennials. It’s a really great opportunity to engage.”
