If you’ve lived in Edmonton for more than a few summers, you get used to our very long days.

4:11 a.m. Coffee. You need coffee. The first streaks of light appear the sky and why are the birds are already up and chirping?

5:04 a.m. It’s officially sunrise. Greet the dawn with cup of coffee No. 3. Black.

1:36 p.m. It’s noon. Wait, isn’t noon, like 12 p.m.? Well, yes and no. To the daylight aficionado, “noon” is when the sun is highest in the sky. The middle of the day is 1:36 p.m., according to the solar system, not your Apple watch. Silly Apple watch. Have lunch.

10:07 p.m. It’s sunset. You’ve been up for almost 18 hours, but it’s only twilight so you’ve got a bit to go, yet.

11 p.m. “Civil twilight,” which sounds like the name of an emo band, comes to an end. If you want to show off, tell people that “civil twilight” is when the sun is fewer than six degrees below the horizon…wait, are you asleep?

But, we’ve used the daylight calendar at the Natural Resources Canada website, and set it to June 21, to figure out just how long you’d be up if you got up at first light and stayed awake till night fell.
