Edmonton’s summer is shaping up to be the season of block parties. Drinking craft beer on a patio while taking in live performers is the new high bar.
The Summer Block Party Series is back for its second year, opening up the streets of Rice Howard Way for pedestrians to enjoy as one giant patio. Enjoy clever cocktails like the Howard St. Smoke Show from Bianco, or classic choices like a Sea Change Brewing IPA from CRAFT Beer Market while sitting at a picnic table, soaking up the sun and entertainment.
On select Saturdays, you can find everything from balloon animal-making to jaw-dropping magic shows — the fun isn’t only for adults. “Being able to bring your child downtown and have them take part in activities while you can enjoy a pizza and a beer out on the street is really nice,” says Quinn Phillips, director of marketing and communications at Edmonton Downtown Business Association.
The kick-off event, on June 7 from 3 – 8 p.m., is a pride celebration partnered with The Pride Centre of Edmonton. A dazzling display from drag and burlesque artist Stretcher Hartout — Alberta’s very own drag superstar, coupled with musical performances and DJ sets for an exciting five-hour lineup.
On July 5, street performers will fascinate and amaze audiences. Additionally, there will be opportunities to create and appreciate art in the streets.
The Summer Block Party Series runs select Saturdays from June 7 to August 17, on Rice Howard Way.
