There are only two more weekends to enjoy a guided, nighttime experience at Elk Island Provincial Park. Take in the gorgeous night sky as you snowshoe around Astotin Lake and breathe in the fresh air. And don’t worry if you can’t tell the difference between the Big Dipper and the Little Dipper because the park interpreter will be your guide to the stars.
Elk Island National Park and the neighbouring Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area are known as the Beaver Hills Dark Sky Reserve. The 300 square-kilometre dark sky preserve is one of the best spots in Alberta to stargaze due to reduced artificial light. You might even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights or a shooting star.
The two-hour guided Dark Sky Experiences tour starts at 7 p.m. on January 22 and January 29. No need to worry if you don’t have snowshoes because they’re available to rent for $14, but it is recommended that attendees bring a headlamp, snow/ski pants and warm clothing. Registration is required and admission to the park costs $8.50 for adults, $7.25 for seniors and youth under 17 years old are free. Attendees must also have a valid park pass.
