If you are looking for a safe way to celebrate an important day, express congratulations or voice words of encouragement to your community, Metro Cinema now offers you a unique and memorable way to do so.
The iconic cinema in the Garneau neighborhood now allows you to design your personal message and put it on its marquee for a day. The service was launched earlier this month.
The number of characters in a message is limited to 125 letters. There are five lines in total, and each can fit about 25 letters. The availability is first-come, first-serve. Edmontonians can reserve the marquee for 24 hours, on any day of the week. The staff at Metro Cinema put the message up at noon and light up the marquee at night. Both sides of the marquee are currently available for reservation. As long as the theatre is closed to the public, two different messages can be displayed on its two respective sides, on the same day.
Metro Cinema is asking for a minimum donation of $150 for reserving one side of the marquee.
Shania Taylor, operations manager at Metro Cinema, says that the theatre will most likely continue offering the service even after it reopens — but will limit it to one side, while the other will display the cinema’s regular programming. If you have a special date in mind, you might want to reserve it in advance — Taylor says the cinema has received multiple requests and inquiries since launching the service.
“It’s been nice because a lot of people have been using it to celebrate birthdays, graduations, and anniversaries, in a safe way,” says Taylor. “It’s been a great way to show an appreciation for loved ones in a safe and responsible way.”
