Cibo Bistro
This category was extremely close; in fact, after the votes were tallied, the judges needed to sit down and discuss this category at length. In the end, we had a switch at the top; Cibo, which had been the perennial second-place finisher, got the nod ahead of Corso 32, who had been the perennial winner. Why did Cibo move up a notch? The fresh pasta, with a variety of ever-changing sauces, makes for a memorable lunch or dinner. The arancini (golden balls of rice and cheese and assorted fillings) are always delectable. The Cibo menu rotates regularly, so it’s difficult to recommend any single dish. But, if you’re stuck, give chef Rosario Caputo’s five-course tasting menu a try. –Steven Sandor

Corso 32
I sheepishly admit, I made my first visit to Corso 32 just a few months back. I know – it’s a much delayed visit, but one I’ve been anticipating. I’ve been to Bar Bricco on several occasions, and even dined at Daniel Costa’s latest restaurant, Uccellino, a couple of times since it opened. The reason for my delay? Failure to get a reservation in this 34-seat venue, where tables are booked months in advance. It was worth the wait, though. I was completely enamoured by the Chinook Salmon Mandorla – the salmon was so soft, it melted in your mouth. The almonds and apple were a nice contrast, giving it a slight crunch. There’s also a slight smoky flavour in there, which I chalk up to the burnt butter. Just make sure you save room for the chocolate torta – a favourite among our judges – which was simply irresistible. –Jasmine Salazar

Cafe Amore Bistro
For years, our judges have debated if the Italian category should be subdivided. And, yes, there is a big difference between going to a restaurant that offers Italian-influenced new cuisine and a place that offers homestyle, traditional eating. If we had a “traditional” category, Cafe Amore would win hands-down. From the warm, inviting atmosphere to the huge servings and wonderful homemade sauces, Cafe Amore is the place to go for a fantastic plate of pasta or a chicken parmagiana. As well, in my most recent visit, the mushroom soup, one of the specialties from the “Soup Lady” – who comes in every morning to craft a soup of the day – was like a rich gravy. –Steven Sandor
