A couple of years ago, Edmontonians were all about fried chicken. New fried-chicken eateries appeared. Established restaurants added fried chicken to their menus. If we were to declare a winner of the Great Fried Chicken Rush, it would be Jake Lee’s establishment. Even though the chicken craze has waned, we still crave SFC. The chicken is brined overnight, so it won’t dry out. The batter is light, flavourful and not too salty. And it’s served in neat little lunchboxes to go. The flavours we love? Go for the Golden Kari, which has curry crumbled on top of the chicken, or the Onion Lover, which is slathered in green onions and served with a mustard sauce. -Steven Sandor

This sandwich spot has earned a devoted following over the years, and for good reason. The menu is small, frequently changing, and inventive. If you’re having trouble picking which sandwich to go with, go Grick; Farrow’s Grick Middle – a simple sandwich with a Four Whistle Farms fried egg, Sangudo bacon, rosemary aioli, smoked cheddar and arugula – is a classic.
