A Dream Takes Stage
Those who have experienced the news of cancer diagnoses can speak to the fog that covers everything and robs bedrooms of sleep.
The Kids with Cancer Society offers programs and services to families whose children have been diagnosed with cancer. It provides Northern Alberta and the Northwest Territories with what it calls the Dream Experience, where children under its care are given the opportunity to live out their fantasies.
For Kyla (age 4), Faith (8) and Mable (6), this meant joining with Citie Ballet, Edmonton’s resident ballet company, to become prima ballerinas for a performance this past April. We’ve gathered photos from their performances on stage, and the preparation that happened behind the curtain.
Kids in the Kitchen
For some, family meals – which are often postponed by hospital visits – is as much a dream as being on a stage with a spotlight.
The Kids with Cancer Society partnered with Rostizado, Avenue’s Best New Restaurant for 2015, and the combination paired together as effortlessly as chili and cilantro. The children were invited into the kitchen: Chopping, mixing, tasting, laughing, all learning how to cook some of the restaurant’s Latin dishes. And, when finished, the parents and children sat together and shared a meal.
