This year, Luminaria is running not just for a weekend, but for the entire month of December. Stroll through the candle-lit trails of the Kurimoto Japanese Garden at the University of Alberta Botanic Garden and take in this enchanted winter wonderland. Sip on hot apple cider beside a bonfire while enjoying seasonal sounds of a capella singers, and spot magical snow sprites in glittering ice sculptures. This is the perfect event to attend with loved ones to pause and remember what the holiday season is all about.
Rainbow Valley Campground will transform into a Winter Wonder Forest from November 27 until January 3. This enchanting holiday light display will illuminate over 115,000 square feet of campground for a magical drive-thru experience. The event is totally contactless, with stunning light installations, ice sculptures, live music, and more. Listen to Rudolph radio and wave to Santa and Mrs. Clause. Tickets are $30 and proceeds go to TrueStart — an affordable housing initiative with a financial literacy component.
Venture 1.5 hours northeast of Edmonton and experience Tales from the Trapline at Métis Crossing — the Métis cultural interpretative centre in Alberta. Sitting on more than 512 acres, Métis Crossing consists of river lot titles from the original Métis settlers to this region in the late 1800s.
Tales from the Trapline is a four-hour immersive Indigenous experience that explores traditional Métis winter activities and skills on a historic Métis River Lot farm. Strap on some snowshoes, set a snare, build a survival shelter and learn traditional art as you create your own unique and beautiful keepsake.
