Does your neighbour always lend you that baking ingredient you’re missing? Do they shovel your driveway when the snow falls? Or help mow your lawn during those busy summer days? Maybe they always wave and ask you how your day was.
Tasks big or small – Edmontonians are all about going out of their way for the people around them. The pandemic has taught us that home happiness goes far beyond the walls of our homes, pouring out into the community that surrounds us. Rümi, a home solutions provider and part of ATCO, wants to celebrate neighbours that have gone above and beyond. Nominate one of your neighbours for Rümi’s Good Neighbour Contest for a chance to win the ultimate block party.
What makes a good neighbour?
Pat and Laszlo
Flashback to March 2020. Just as the COVID-19 pandemic started to impact Alberta, single mom Natalie gave birth to twins. Expecting to be flooded with support from friends and family, the pandemic put a wrench in Natalie’s plans leaving her isolated with her newborns.
A couple that lived across the street noticed Natalie’s newest additions and immediately started acting as surrogate grandparents. “For the last year and a half they have been shoveling my walks, mowing my lawns and generally cleaning up the yard. They also have run errands for me and have been making me dinner a few times a week. They care so much about us, and it makes me smile to know there are people like them in this world,” says Natalie.
Garry
In the winter, it is a “contest” to see if Edmonton resident, Heather, can beat her neighbour, Garry, to shovel her sidewalk. “Garry is already shoveling driveways of neighbours who are less mobile. In the summer, he plants, weeds, waters, trims and makes more than a few gardens beautiful. His generosity with his work and time are invaluable to us – whether it be gardening, shoveling or bike-fixing,” says Heather.
