This story begins in 1964, when a company that started as a research organization was faced with a seemingly impossible question: How do we tap Canada’s vast oil sands resource?
Fortunately, Syncrude didn’t have to look much further than Edmonton to find many leading minds that would go on to push the frontiers of energy science. Not only did this group of pioneering engineers, chemists, geologists, biologists and other scientists develop the technological advancements that cracked the oil sands puzzle, but they also turned Alberta into the heart of Canada’s energy sector in the process. From the company’s earliest days, one realization became crystal clear: the success of Syncrude is inextricably linked to the success of the places its people call home — Fort McMurray and Edmonton. So began Syncrude’s long and proud tradition of supporting, boosting and doing its part to make these strong, vibrant communities even stronger and more vibrant.
Today, building on more than 55 years of responsible oil sands development, Syncrude continues to proudly invest in many aspects of Edmonton life. From health care, as a long-time supporter of several major hospitals and their initiatives to enhance patient care. To education, through post-secondary learning, training, scholarships and student outreach programs. To the arts, through the Roxy Theatre, Nextfest and the Art Gallery of Alberta. To events and programs that celebrate Indigenous culture and support Indigenous entrepreneurship. To the environment, through efforts that preserve natural areas and enhance biodiversity, as well as to Edmonton’s CFL Team, Telus World of Science, the United Way and many more.
From one Edmonton success story to another, Syncrude congratulates Edify as it sets out on its new adventure to inform and uplift Edmontonians through its engaging stories.
