Picture it: It’s the middle of 2020. Nicola Lapp decides to start a home-based floral business called TwinFlower Studio. If this sounds like a dubious business plan, think again.
The business took off, thanks to a community of local supporters. In April 2023, Lapp opened a studio space on Stony Plain Road for her blossoming business. In March 2025, TwinFlower Studio and Boutique moved to its current location on 134 Street.
“The motto I had when I first founded the business was: flowers, community, love,” says Lapp. “It’s the three ingredients we work with here.”
Compare the floristry industry to the restaurant industry. If you’re looking for a quick bite, fast food is the easiest option, and the floral equivalent is a grocery store bouquet. Now imagine you’re dining better, somewhere with a tasteful atmosphere, fresh, sustainably produced ingredients and an extensive wine list. The floral equivalent is TwinFlower, a collaborative, elevated experience where there are no naive questions or industry secrets, and there’s a lot of attention to detail. “All those little moments and little touches really add up to a big future for us,” Lapp says.
But beyond that elevated experience is what truly sets TwinFlower apart: its focus on creating sustainable floral arrangements, meaning almost all of her designs do not use bleach, dyes or artificial floral elements. Lapp says she is committed to supporting local flower farmers, always looks to decrease the industry’s reliance on single use plastics. “There are materials that we haven’t found a good way of creating in an environmentally friendly way,” she says, “but we do our best.” So, what you smell is what you get — all-natural displays, without the green floral foam.
The TwinFlower Studio and Boutique space is fragrant and lined with shelves of plants, bringing a jungle vibe, as well as bouquets in the store’s refrigerator. The boutique part of the experience also includes locally made products, from bath and body essentials to jewelry. Patrons get a clear view into the shop’s makerspace where Lapp and her team compose masterpieces.
“People in the community have fallen in love with us and appreciate what we do,” Lapp says, and personal connection is a value proposition at TwinFlower. But not everyone buys flowers to celebrate. “Even though it’s not always a happy moment, sometimes it’s just about how you can walk people through their grief or their joy.”
