I’m surrounded by sleek, clean lines and warm-toned neutrals as I step into Verdant Furniture. The shop, tucked just off of Whitemud Drive, is open and airy — a space designed to be both functional and beautiful. Technically I’m on the clock, so I have to resist the (very strong) urge to sink into the plush, inviting sectional to my left.
Verdant Furniture’s story began in Ukraine in 2014, with furniture crafted from pallets. As demand grew, so did the quality, evolving into premium, solid-wood pieces. Two years ago, co-owner Vlad Radchenko moved to Canada and brought Verdant Furniture with him, while keeping manufacturing in Ukraine. But this isn’t just a business expansion — it’s a testament to resilience.
Radchenko’s childhood best friend and now business partner, Vitaliy Brunko, had already built a life in Canada after moving as a child with his mother. With a background in construction, Brunko developed an expert eye for durability and design. The two reconnected during Brunko’s visits to Ukraine between 2016 and 2019, dreaming of working together to build something with international reach. When war in Ukraine hastened Radchenko’s move, their vision became more urgent — creating furniture that isn’t just stylish, but durable.
And that’s Verdant Furniture’s core philosophy: furniture that endures, moves with you, and can be refinished instead of replaced. The handcrafted pieces can be placed in bedrooms, kitchens and dining rooms, all made from solid wood.
“Solid wood is timeless. It’s an investment. You’re not buying something that you’re going to throw out in two years, it’s almost generational. Back in the day, our parents passed on furniture to us. This is the same vibe.”
This store doesn’t limit you to what’s on the floor. Customers can tweak designs, choose finishes, or even send in a photo of a dream piece, and Verdant Furniture will make it happen.
“We’re really flexible,” Brunko says. “We can fulfill any of the customer’s needs.”
