Dosti Tandoor Grill
and Mixology
Guru, a staple of Indian fine dining
with two locations, has rebranded
its West End restaurant as Dosti
Tandoor Grill and Mixology. It’s
conceptualized as a social space
where patrons can gather and
linger over shared plates and
drinks. The menu is more tradi-
tional Indian at a slightly lower
price point, while the drink
menu has a premium quality —
a global selection of wines, and
cocktails made with South Asian
spices and spirits (think: black
cardamom, chai amchoor and
paan-infused shochu). The head
mixologist Andrew Wood’s
creations pair perfectly with the
bold and rich dishes by head chef
Swapan Debnath. Try the Dosti
cauliflower marinated in a bright
red chili garlic sauce, and slow-
cooked chicken biryani. Finish it
off with a mango panna cotta
in flaky pie crust and maybe
another round for the table. After
all, the Hindi translation of Dosti
means “friendship.”

Pharaohs Restaurant
As Edmonton’s only Egyptian
restaurant, Pharaohs offers
traditional North African comfort
food that few are familiar with.
Start with ta’ameya (Egyptian
falafel) made from fava beans;
they’re light, aromatic, crisp
with a sesame crust and served
with cumin-spiced tahini. The
hawawshi is a standout: spiced
beef tucked into oiled pita and
grilled until golden, somewhere
between a panini and a gordita.

Add a side of molokhia, a
garlicky stew of minced mallow
leaves ladled over sticky rice.
For dessert, try the Omm Ali —
a warm puff pastry pudding with
cream, coconut and toasted
almonds, named after a legendary
femme fatale. This is Egypt’s
culinary soul, plated.
