1. Lock Stock Coffee
Lock Stock Coffee shares the space with Red Star Pub, so while it’s a coffee shop by day, it transforms into a pub at night. The cafe offers an abundance of space for lounging or working and, if you’re not a morning person, you’ll be glad to know that it won’t blind you with bright and jarring light. Dimly lit and wood lined, it’s a great spot to meet over a cup of coffee, brewed with Ace Coffee Roasters beans. For a snack, there’s plenty to choose from — pastries, desserts, breakfast sandwiches and the cafe’s own specialty, the Lock Stock BLT with house-made focaccia and tomato jam. — Kateryna Didukh

2. The Colombian Coffee Bar & Roastery
Once upon a time, there was a neighbourhood named Glenora. This part of the city would regularly finish atop Avenue’s Best Neighbourhood list, but, alas, it didn’t have a coffee shop to call its own. Then the Lopez family arrived and opened up a slot right by Glenora School, inviting all the parents who walked their kids to school on weekday mornings and back in the afternoons. They served roasted Colombian coffee without fancy names or flavourings. They served croissants with guava. The lineups became regular sights. The Lopez family provided Glenora with the coffee shop it didn’t realize it so badly needed. And everyone lived happily ever after. — Steven Sandor
