So, here’s the situation — the Canadian/Ethiopian singer drops a new single on Friday. “Situation” is Ruth B.’s first new single release of 2021, piggybacking off the re-release of her song, “If I have a Son,” featuring the Harlem Gospel Travellers, in honour of Black History Month. Her new song was produced by Ido Zmishlany, who’s produced music for fellow Canadian singer Shawn Mendes and Demi Lovato. The single comes ahead of her new album which drops in June. The album will be her first full-length album since her debut album came out in 2017.
Ruth B. grew up in Edmonton and found stardom in 2015 after her first song “Lost Boy” went viral on Vine, reaching over 7 million views to date, which we wrote about in a feature about the rising star. After signing with Columbia Records, then making the switch to Downtown Records, Ruth B. joined the club of Canadian singers such as Alessia Cara and Justin Bieber who found fame after going viral.
The 25-year-old won a Juno Award for Breakthrough Artist in 2017 and was recently mentioned by Elton John on his Apple Music Show, “Elton John’s Rocket Hour.” On the show, Sir Elton listed her amongst other Canadian legends such as Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Drake and The Weeknd. She was hand-picked to perform “Heart of Gold” for Neil Young at his induction to the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, and she performed “Heaven” for Bryan Adams when he received his Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual SOCAN Awards in 2017.
From performing in her bedroom to performing in front of some of Canada’s top legends, there’s no telling what’s next for Ruth B.
