For the first time, the Edmonton Opera is presenting contemporary operas such as Svadba-Wedding, starring six female a capella singers telling the story of friends who help prepare a Balkan bride-to-be on the night before her wedding – the show is the perfect marriage of tradition and contemporary thought. Svadba-Wedding premiered January 12, and following the show, 135 people – representing a sold-out house – packed the lobby of C103 (formerly the Catalyst Theatre) for an after-party. Guests, opera subscribers and members of Queen of Puddings, producers of the opera, attended the event and ate cupcakes provided by Cake Couture. “Svadba marks our attempt to present something new, more contemporary – something that appeals to younger audiences. It complements our regular main stage grand operas at the Jubilee. We’re excited to be more versatile,” explained Jelena Bojic, the opera’s director of community relations.
