Crystal Pretula is the type of designer who’d leave herself a voice memo in the middle of the night when a punny one-liner runs into her brain. Either a “hey there, hot-tea” mug idea, or a “I want to dance with some bunny” card idea for Easter drives her to the desktop and click.
“I’ve had the privilege to work on many corporate design projects, for 10 years, back in Calgary”, says Pretula. “But there was something missing working for someone else.”
Pretula calls herself “the Prairie Chick.” She believes that being born and raised in Alberta gave her sassiness in her personality. But she failed to find a way to express that sass in most of her commissioned art works.
“At the Prairie Chicks Prints, we make charming and cheeky goods,” says the former corporate graphic designer. She’s not afraid to throw cuss words and bold statements onto her cards and art prints, and her fans love it.
Who makes the rules of what type of attitude your home goods should have? Sometimes, you may need a mug that says “hot mess mama” to calm down the morning nerves. And don’t forget to send your bestie a card every now and then, to remind them that “a true friend is cheaper than therapy, and they bring wine.”
“At the end of the day, we all need a good laugh from something,” shares the Prairie Chick, “even if it’s just from a stupid week planner.”
