I have always enjoyed painting. I gravitated towards it over sketches and pastels when I was younger and used to like coming home and finding paint splatters on all my clothes, a few times in my hair. To me, painting felt instinctive and the best thing about acrylics was they were easy to paint over.
I spent a lot of my time (free and otherwise) in my high school art room. The world would fade away and I could focus solely on my canvas. I would use a lot of colours and watch them melt into each other, yellow ochre into burnt sienna. I haven’t painted in a long time. I promised myself I would during the lockdowns, but I suck at the whole work-life balance thing. I want to get better with it, though, and the long weekend coming up is the perfect time to try it.
The Lotus Art Gallery is holding outdoor painting classes, the first on April 3rd from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Artist and instructor Mariam Qureshi will be teaching the class on abstract art in acrylic paints. The $45 ticket price covers all the supplies you’ll need as she teaches you important skills, like how to add shadows in paintings, but there are only six spots available, so book your slot quickly.
