Counting down the days until Christmas with 24 gifts has become a holiday “treat-yourself,” and there are advent calendars for everything from beauty products to booze.
But a local favourite is the Short Story Advent Calendar (SSAC) – the ultimate curated short story collection. Now in its third edition, the 2017 SSAC includes 24 different short stories, each in its own individual package. The stories are written by notable writers from around the world. If you get one, you’ll be in good company – comedian Patton Oswalt has one. After tweeting about his discovery of the Short Story Advent Calendar in 2015, he bought one in 2016 and shared his daily reads with his millions of followers (alongside the drinks from his Master of Malt whisky advent calendar).
You can order one directly from the publisher – Edmonton’s Michael Hingston and Calgary’s Natalie Olsen – at www.hingstonandolsen.com, or pick one up at Audreys Books or the Royal Bison Art and Craft Fair (November 24-26 and December 1-3).
