“Drag is kind of synonymous with Christmas,” says Vanity Fair, one of five queens to take the Capitol Theatre stage this holiday season. “Any excuse to put glitter and sparkle all over our house, not just our own bodies, is a good thing.
“If you buy tickets to our show, your admission at the gate to the market is actually included. So a portion of the $30 goes to us and a portion goes to your gate admission. It’s an amazing show — definitely more formal than a lot of venues we would do drag in, but it’s such a cool atmosphere because it’s an old theatre with good vibes, so it’s a lot of fun.”
“The show is way more structured and choreographed than people probably think when they think of a typical drag show. We have a full set and lighting cues and good music and all that, with a bunch of fun drag queens crooning fabulously. Christmas songs happen to make good drag numbers, so there’s probably some predictable songs in there, but we’ve tried to put a little different spin by finding a different cover or a different version than people are used to.”
“The audience is very involved. We always want people making noise at a drag show — that’s their biggest job! And we have a couple numbers where performers entertain through the crowd and give them some love, and the audience ends up getting up and dancing. And it’s very family friendly, which kind of makes sense: If you’re at a holiday market, there’s a bunch of kids around and you want to get them involved, too!”
“We’ve had pretty good turnout for the first shows, which was awesome, but we’re hoping to sell out the final show on December 16th. I think honestly, if people are just able to sit there in a space with amazing energy, and forget about what’s going on in the outside world for an hour and smile, then we’re happy.”
